<br />
<br />
<div>
I started this simple quilt in 2015 when I flew out to Oakland to be with my daughter and son-in-law and to meet my new grandson just days after his birth.</div>
<br />
I had no plan for the quilt top, it just grew, and when my daughter expressed a desire to have the finished product as well as for it to be larger, I added a row at the top and bottom.<br />
<br />
The two red, white and black bird fabrics are Japanese. The greenish fabric in the nine-patch blocks has colorful, whimsical owls - I love anything with owls!<br />
<br />
I stitched in the ditch between the rows in both directions and then big-stitched with perle cotton on the blocks. I had no plan for the big stitching, just did what I felt like as it progressed. Blue big-stitching outlines the large birds in the center blocks. Big-stitched black arcing lines run around the blocks inside the red border. On the remaining blocks, I big-stitched circles in black or white.<br />
<br />
The quilt seems to ramble. My daughter loves it - says it's the most beautiful thing she owns. Now that is gratification. Plus, even more gratifying, she and her husband and my precious little grandson now live in Minneapolis.<br />
<br />
The quilt with no plan except to be with my daughter.<br />

I am in a small group of eight women who get together monthly, challenging ourselves to learn new techniques and processes from each other. We call ourselves the Loose Threads. Here is a photo of a few of us at our July meeting. Gingerly, I am hand stitching, gingerly, due to a fractured left elbow (it has almost healed completely, thank goodness.) Thanks to fellow Loose Thread, Carol (of <a href="http://giraffedreams.blogspot.com/">Giraffe Dreams</a>) who took the photo.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"White Privilege" is made entirely of fabrics having a print of either a writing script or a children's theme. Snowballs blocks with children's prints run on the diagonal, progressing in time from vintage (lower left) to contemporary (upper right,) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the snowball blocks, I did big stitching with black perle cotton to emphasize the hexagon shapes. I made all of the pinwheels from the little triangles left from the snowball blocks. I put the pinwheels into blocks of four with a black perle cotton tie in the center. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used all nine children's print fabrics in my stash, of which only two showed children of color. Hence the name "White Privilege."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The numerous script fabrics vary from antique-looking scripts to contemporary, and include a crossword puzzle, a Japanese script, a script that looks something like hieroglyphics, and a faint cursive script surrounded by tiny birds sitting on telephone wires.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my forty year career, I worked with children and youth of all ages, mostly in the inner city. They were my inspiration for this piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"White Privilege" was exhibited in venues all over the Twin Cities in an exhibit called "Cycles" put together by Minnesota Contemporary Quilters. The exhibit ran from June 2016 through May 2017.</div>

<br />
Here's the log cabin quilt I made while anticipating my grandson's birth. The logs are one inch wide, finished. The three inch square centers have a bunny theme - bunnies playing, hiding, running around.... The finished blocks are 13 inches square. Thirteen is my lucky number. I was married on the 13th and my daughter was born on the 13th.<br />

Detail of a fun modern quilt:<br />

The black is a beautiful tone. The photo doesn't do it justice.<br />

The soft toned fabric and the embellished tree are lovely on the quilt below. (Note the predominently green floor which shows up in many of the photos. It is a map of Dakota County.)<br />

This pretty quilted picture of the Golden Gate Bridge makes me think of my daughter and her husband, who live in the Bay area. Look at the dense, traditional patterns of the machine quilting:<br />

This beautiful needle-turned appliquéd quilt in batiks was my husband's favorite quilt. I couldn't stand back far enough to get the whole quilt in the picture but three of the borders are visible. Imagine the time that went into this:<br />

The quilt below was also huge and used just three batik fabrics, rose, mossy green and taupe, and the piecing is very intricate:<br />

Below, my favorite rendition of the mystery quilt - love the color palette. Look at the red half-square triangles, how the corners on the long side of each triangle were intentionally blunted, an interesting design twist. The fabric used in the border, pinwheels and center medallion is fun and makes the quilt very lively:<br />

The colors are rich and the square grid design is very architectural in this striking large quilt. It was hung in a spot with very poor lighting:<br />

Since I used scraps to make identical blocks, I call it "controlled scrappiness." I have loved working on this quilt, and hand-stitching the binding is peaceful and therapeutic.<br />
<br />
Here is the back. I love the Dr. Seuss Lorax fabric! <br />

The quilt measures 53" x 59" and since taking these photos I have added some big stitching with perle cotton.<br />
<br />
And for something fun, here is the blackboard at the Happy Gnome restaurant on Selby Avenue in St. Paul. I have developed a palate for a good craft beer, although I don't always finish it. My husband backs me up there.<br />

"Milkweed Cycle" in progress -<br />
Here are the nine pieces of "Milkweed Cycle" assembled in a circle on the pink design board. Nine women each made one section. It's fun to see the nine pieces come together as a whole. The only guidelines we all followed were to use the same size template and to put something representing the sun at the center tip.<br />

"Cycles" quilt challenge: Milkweed...<br />
(Tap on the photo if it's out of focus!)<br />
<br />
The Minnesota Contemporary Quilters' current challenge is to create a wallhanging no larger than 36" x 36." The theme is "Cycles." I'm in a small quilting group of nine women and we decided to make a group piece based on the cycle of the milkweed plant. <br />
<br />
We divided a large paper circle into nine equal pie-shaped pieces, each of us taking a pie-piece to use as a template for representing one stage of the milkweed cycle. I depicted the milkweed plant with mature leaves. Willy-nilly, I added a caterpillar, which led each of the other women to incorporate into her stage of the milkweed cycle the appropriate stage of the monarch butterfly's life cycle.<br />
<br />
The milkweed plant is absolutely necessary to the life cycle of a monarch butterfly; there is no other plant that monarchs use. We all know that monarch numbers are decreasing rapidly and dramatically due to loss of habitat and the use of chemical sprays along their migratory path. Milkweed plants are native to Minnesota prairies - we have some milkweed in the prairie my husband planted in our front yard.<br />
<br />
Happy spring in a couple days. It is snowing here at the moment.<br />

If you have suggestions, I welcome them. Do you get spam? I also can't figure out why, when I try to post a comment on the blogs I follow, sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.<br />

My mother died a few weeks ago. I sewed a quilted "slipcover" for the box containing her cremains, which we will bury in the spring. I embellished it with wide, fine ivory lace and four clear Swarovski crystals in the shape of a cross, one for each of her children. It doesn't seem right to show it here, but I think she would like it very much. It's very "her."<br />

Here is a quote from one of my mother's favorite poets, Mary Oliver:<br />
<br />
To live in this world<br />
<br />
you must be able<br />
to do three things:<br />
to love what is mortal;<br />
to hold it<br />
<br />
against your bones knowing<br />
your own life depends on it;<br />
and, when the time comes to let it go,<br />
to let it go.<br />

From "In Blackwater Woods" by Mary Oliver, in American Primitive.<br />

I made up this quilted envelope-style case for my smart phone, to add a little extra protection in my purse. It's envelope-style so it's easy to get it in and out. I used a piece of fabric from a give-away scrap table. Look at all the foreign postage stamps on it, and they are images of real stamps - dinosaurs from my generation.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Foundation Firm</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My daughter, Molly, has a birthday today. One week ago, Nash, her husband, had his birthday. They live in the Bay area. I made them this wall-hanging and called it Foundation Firm. The bluish-greenish background is a beautiful piece of hand-dyed cotton made by a local Minnesota fabric dyer. The colors suggest the sky at sunrise behind a lovely cool forest. The center scrap depicts an old-world neighborhood, perhaps in Italy, set upon a hill. The whitish rectangular fabric underneath the neighborhood has a black, indecipherable, antique-looking script that appears to be written with a fountain pen. I think of it as bedrock. Underneath that, running above the bottom border, I placed a hand-dyed pink/lilac fabric with hints of warm orange and gold, which I imagine to be a subterranean river.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Foundation Firm is a double-entendre: a firm foundation is necessary for a marriage (good old-fashioned communication, with the text of the antique script known just to the two.) A firm foundation is also necessary for a house (solid bedrock.) The word bedrock is made up of "rock" and "bed." Underneath the bedrock, the flowing river sustains and restores and, over time, water smoothes rough edges.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When pondering on a name, I thought of the old hymn, How Firm a Foundation. The piecing was pure stream-of-consciousness, the pieces slightly irregular in shape and placed slightly askew, like a dream. I machine-quilted the layers with a walking foot using metallic and variegated threads. I am very happy with how it turned out.</div>

Happy New Year, and may 2014 bring you many good things. As I write I realize there will be sadness and difficult times too. Like in a quilt, where we use the "ugly" and "muddy" and "maverick" scraps of fabric along with the pretty ones to enhance the play of color and movement, so too in life.<br />

I made this little piece before the snow started falling. I picked a grape vine leaf and traced it on a piece of goldish-green batik fabric. I drew some veins on the fabric leaf with a ballpoint pen and machine-stitched some of the veins with metallic gold thread. The deep purple fabric behind the fabric leaf is a monochromatic print with cranes in flight, the lines of the cranes echoing the shape of the grape leaf. The stripes are Kaffe Fassett and the solids are his shot cottons. I hand stitched with perle cotton to finish the square. It was serendipity that the stripe in the bias binding matched up perfectly at both ends. I was going to mail this piece to the quilt museum in San Jose for a food-theme exhibit, but once I finished it I couldn't part with it. Grape leaves are special in my heritage. I learned how to pick and stuff grape leaves from my Armenian grandfather.<br />

This is my mother, only child of my Armenian grandfather and my Norwegian grandmother. She is very resilient and grows more beautiful with each year. We'll celebrate her 90th birthday on Saturday. The photo was taken at a Christmas tea in December.<br />

My mother has had ovarian cancer for over 6 years. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks. This photo was taken around Thanksgiving at one of her treatments:<br />

She has stayed very engaged with the world. My sister and I were her guests at the recent St. Paul AAUW's Christmas tea:<br />

For a good part of 2013, I had a foot problem following bunion surgery and my mobility was limited. I whined. At the same time, my 89 year old mother was taking group tap-dance lessons.<br />

This is a postcard I whipped up. There are three eggs (clustered knots of silver metallic thread) in the bird nest below the cluster of purple grapes. Eggs are a good symbol for the new year.<br />
<br />
Wishing you a blessed 2014!<br />

A wall-hanging I made in 2012. "Det var så koselig."<br />
<br />
I got news this morning that a person very dear to me died, Gyda, my 98 year old Norwegian relative in Norway. I last talked to Gyda on Monday, when her son called from her bedside in Oslo and handed her his mobile phone. This morning I had a text from him that she passed away yesterday.<br />
<br />
Gyda was enormously important to me, like another mother. A year ago I finished the wall-hanging "Det var så koselig" which means something like "it was so cozy." That was one of Gyda's typical expressions. I embroidered Norwegian words in the dotted fabric around the scrappy center. The wallhanging is 36 inches by 40 inches and was made for a Minnesota Contemporary Quilters' challenge called "Abode."<br />
<br />
Below, Gyda and me in 2010, near Sandefjord, Norway.<br />

I'm not a techie so I will be simple.<br />
<br />
This is a little piece I made in 2012, my first to be in an exhibit. The exhibit, put together by Caron Lage, is titled <a href="http://artfromearthfromabove.weebly.com/">Art From Earth From Above</a> and is based on the aerial photos shot by French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand for his "Earth from Above" series of books. The exhibit will travel around Minnesota and North Dakota for a year.<br />
<br />
I chose a photograph of Hittite ruins in Turkey. My piece is about 16 inches by 12 inches. Right below it is the Yann Arthus-Bertrand photo that was my prompt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://artfromearthfromabove.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/7/8/19784815/4566301.jpg?658" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="488" src="https://artfromearthfromabove.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/7/8/19784815/4566301.jpg?658" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://artfromearthfromabove.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/7/8/19784815/4058870.jpg?654" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="https://artfromearthfromabove.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/7/8/19784815/4058870.jpg?654" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I made one inch half-square triangles for the terrain and added pieces of a cut-up crocheted doily for the ruins and a beaded ribbon for a river passing through the ruins. There is no actual river in the photo, just a dirt-track road. I turned the road into a beautiful river. A river is a good symbol.<br />
<br />
In my piece, some of the green triangles between the river and the ruins have dark red dots, representing Armenian blood.<br />

<br /></div>
Here I am in 2011, in Afyon, Turkey, the town in which my Armenian maternal grandfather was born and raised. He left Turkey in August, 1914 with a scholarship to Macalester College in St. Paul, shortly before the onset of the Armenian Genocide in April, 1915, in which he lost his family. He never returned to Turkey. My husband and I climbed the long, steep path to the top of the rocky tor, the site of a restored Hittite fortress that dominates all the town's views. At the foot of the tor is the old Armenian neighborhood, most of its late-19th century homes well-preserved and occupied, with no record of Armenians ever having lived there.<br />
<br />
We stayed in Afyon for one night, in a slightly tatty but elegant hotel. No one spoke more than a few words and phrases in English. Here is the large repeated motif on the bedspread of one the beds in our spacious hotel room, which could have accommodated a whole family:<br />
